I noticed that there was still a branch left in the JITted code per reference count decrement even with the bytecode optimizer work. I thought: “why not try eliminating the branch”, and had no clue how much it would help. It turns out a single branch is actually quite expensive and these add up over time. Especially if it’s =1 branch for every single Python instruction!
